Roy is a city in Weber County on the west side of Interstate 15, with 39,306 people at the 2020 census, up 6.6 percent from 2010. It covers about 7.6 square miles and is mainly residential.

Roy is entirely within Weber School District, with seven elementary schools, three junior highs and two high schools. Busy family homes put real demand on water heaters, drains and laundry lines, especially on winter mornings when incoming water is coldest.

Named for a schoolteacher's son

Roy was settled in 1873 by William Evans Baker and Esther Celestia Cole Baker and their children. It was known at different times as Central City, Sandridge, the Basin and Lakeview before taking its name from Roy C. Peebles, a local schoolteacher's child who had died. A post office made the name official on May 24, 1894, and the city incorporated on March 10, 1937, with Joseph William Jensen as its first mayor. Businesses were few until the early 1940s. Many Roy homes now have mature yards with established trees, whose roots can find older sewer joints. If drains slow every year or two, a camera can confirm whether roots are the reason.
