Signs a pipe has frozen

One faucet runs while another gives only a trickle, a toilet won't refill, or frost forms on a pipe in the crawl space or garage. If nothing in the house works, the freeze may be where the main line enters, which can need a plumber's equipment to thaw.

Thaw carefully

Open the faucet the pipe serves so water can flow as the ice melts. Warm the pipe with a hair dryer, a portable heater kept away from anything that burns, or warm towels, working from the faucet back. Never use a torch or open flame inside walls or crawl spaces.

Hose bibs and sprinkler lines

A frost-free hose bib only stays safe if the hose is disconnected before winter. A hose left on traps water that freezes and splits the valve inside the wall, which often shows up as a leak in the basement the first time the tap is used in spring.

When the pipe has burst

Burst pipes may not leak until they thaw. As the water starts moving again, watch and listen. If you hear running water or see a spray, close the main immediately. Split sections need to be cut out and replaced, not patched with tape or clamps.

Stopping it next winter

After a repair, ask which pipes are on the cold side of the insulation and whether they can be rerouted, insulated or protected with heat cable. Sealing drafts around the rim joist and crawl space vents often solves repeat freezes.
