Checking a Utah Plumber Before You Hire
Utah licenses plumbers through the state, and the license types tell you a lot about who you're hiring. Checking takes a couple of minutes.
Request a plumberWho licenses plumbers
The Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL) licenses plumbers in the state.
License types
DOPL issues apprentice, journeyman, residential journeyman, master and residential master plumber licenses. Residential licenses cover residential work.
Verify it
Use the state's "Verify a License" search to check that a plumber's license is active.
Permits
Water heater replacements, sewer repairs, repiping and remodels often need a permit and inspection. Ask who will arrange it.
Quotes in writing
For larger jobs, ask for a written quote listing the work, materials and permit.

Questions to ask
Who will do the work, and what license do they hold? Is the business insured? How long will the water be off? What warranty covers the labor and any new equipment? Clear, straightforward answers are a good sign.
Red flags
Be cautious of anyone who wants full payment upfront, can't give a license number or suggests skipping a permit. A licensed plumber should be comfortable explaining the permit and inspection.
Keep the paperwork
Keep the invoice, permit and warranty papers together with your house records, and note the brand and model of anything installed. If something fails later, it makes the next repair much quicker.
Gas lines
If the job involves a gas water heater, range or gas line, ask whether the person doing it is qualified for gas work as well as plumbing. Gas piping usually needs a permit and a pressure test before the gas is turned back on.
